Two Gigabyte Cavium ThunderX ARM Servers Shown Off

ThunderX ARM 64bit Servers

Something that skipped almost everyone’s eye at CES recently was that Gigabyte had brought along two models of its Cavium ThunderX ARM Servers.

While there are four of the Cavium Thunder 88xx at their OEM arm, the two they have shown off now are 1U R150-T60 and 2U R270-T60. The image below shows off 1U R150-T60.

That being said, both these servers come with 3.5″ HDD and 10 x 2.5″ HDD configurations variants.

Other features include an Inphi Cortina CS4343 controller with 40GbE. Talking of the 2U R270-T60, it has 2x40GbE for each node which is the same as their other model 1U 1S R120-T30 – this was not shown at CES and so was not 2U H270-T70.

Moving on, the 2U H270-T70 and the 1U R150-T6 have 3x40GbE for each server and 4x10GbE. Also, all these models come with a link to management controller Aspeed AST2400.

There are eight quad-channel configuration DDR4 DIMM for each socket supporting up to DDR4/2400. In 2U configuration you can pack 384 cores and 8x40GbE ports.

Cavium Unveils Flash Support for the Cavium ThunderX™ Processor Family

ThunderX processors with SanDisk Flash solutions will accelerate performance for HPC and Hyperscale workloads

Frankfurt, Germany, July 13, 2015 – Cavium, Inc., (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, cloud, wired and wireless networking, today announced  support for SanDisk flash memory solutions  with Cavium’s 64-bit ThunderX processor family, to accelerate the  performance of  Hyperscale and HPC workloads.

“Our ARMv8 ThunderX processors deliver best-in-class performance for high-intensity workloads such as HPC, big data, and large-scale web applications. With up to 48 high-performance cores and integrated accelerators, we help drive faster results and reduced TCO,” said Steve Cumings, Director, Market Development, Cavium.  “SanDisk is a leader in flash technology and we look forward to working with them to deliver best-in-class solutions.”

SanDisk delivers innovative datacenter storage solutions ranging from Solid State Drives (SSDs) to PCIe application accelerators and storage systems.  These solutions accelerate performance of servers and storage arrays supporting cloud, big data and database workloads, and market research data shows that flash technology is being rapidly adopted across all computing tiers.  Each solution enables faster processing – and faster time-to-results – as customers seek to address the gap between increasing processor speeds and slow-moving hard disk drive (HDD) storage.

“SanDisk delivers Flash-based storage solutions that accelerate workload performance for our customers and we see Cavium taking a similar CPU design approach for HPC and other demanding workloads,” said John Scaramuzzo, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Solutions, SanDisk.  “As datacenter workloads, compute and storage requirements continue to grow, so too will the demand for flash based storage acceleration. We intend to work with and enable innovators like Cavium to address these needs.”

The ThunderX product family provides best-in-class 64-bit ARMv8 data center and cloud processors, offering an unprecedented level of integration and industry leading SoC performance. With high performance custom cores, single and dual socket configurations, very high memory bandwidth, and integrated hardware accelerators, this family of processors delivers best-in-class performance per dollar and performance per watt.  The ThunderX family includes multiple SKUs that are board-compatible, enabling servers optimized for compute, storage, network and security.
