San Jose, Calif. , May 2, 2016 – Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of products that enable secure and intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, cloud, wired and wireless networking, today unveiled OCTEON TX, a complete line of 64-bit ARM based SOCs for control plane and data plane applications in networking, security, and storage. This new product line is composed of 4 product families - CN80XX, CN81XX, CN82XX and CN83XX with 1 to 24 full custom, enhanced 64-bit ARM v8.1 cores, providing the industry’s broadest range of highly integrated 64-bit ARM SOC products for a wide variety of embedded processing applications. The OCTEON TX expands the addressability of Cavium’s embedded products into control plane application areas within enterprise, service provider, data center networking and storage that need support of extensive software ecosystem and virtualization features. This product line is also optimized to run multiple concurrent data and control planes simultaneously for security and router appliances, NFV and SDN infrastructure, service provider CPE, wireless transport, NAS, storage controllers, IOT gateways, printer and industrial applications.

Market Dynamics
The networks of the future are striving to become more open and application centric to enable service expansion and increase monetization. In this open network, the control plane needs to run commercial software distributions and operating systems (e.g., RHEL, Canonical and Java SE), support open source applications (e.g., OpenStack, OpenFlow and Quagga), launch services dynamically and run customer specific services. The data plane is also challenged to support concurrent coexistence of multiple types of high performance data plane applications for firewall, content delivery, routing, and traffic management. The bandwidth demanded for these data planes in networks is also exploding driven by multimedia 4K content and applications, exabytes of storage mirrored across Cloud and Enterprise, real time data acquisition, and rapid growth of connected devices in the IOT world. The threats inside these open networks of cloud and enterprise are becoming increasingly sophisticated and vulnerabilities are becoming more exposed with the connectivity of millions of unsecured IOT devices.

The OCTEON SOC architecture already has established market leadership in data plane application performance and efficiency. While current OCTEON SOCs are used in applications for data plane as well as control plane with embedded software, control plane applications requiring wider software ecosystem and support traditionally have been addressed by the x86 architecture. The open, service centric networks need lower-cost alternatives for control plane, and superior ecosystem and networking performance for data plane. The ARM architecture is able to service these critical needs.

The OCTEON TX ARM 64-bit SOC family of processors combine the best in class data plane performance of the OCTEON® SOC family, and the rich software ecosystem and virtualization features, extended support of open source applications and highly optimized custom ARMv8.1 CPU cores of the ThunderX® family. Cavium and Argela to Deliver ProgRAN, a Fully Programmable, SDN-based RAN Solution for LTE and 5G

SAN JOSE, CA, BARCELONA, SPAIN Feb 22, 2016 – Cavium, Inc., (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, wired and wireless networking, today announced that it has expanded its partnership with Argela, a member of Turk Telekom group, to include the availability of ProgRAN on Cavium’s OCTEON Fusion-M™ and ThunderX® network infrastructure processors.  ProgRAN is a fully programmable, SDN-based RAN solution for LTE and 5G developed by Argela.

The tremendous growth in wireless Internet use is showing no signs of slowing down. The explosion in this demand is not only due to the increase in the number of connections but also due to the multimedia-rich applications, which form the majority of these connections. Existing cellular networks will be insufficient, in part due to their inflexible and expensive equipment, as well as the complex and non-agile control plane of today’s wireless networks.

Argela’s newly announced ProgRAN solution paired with Cavium’s leading OCTEON Fusion-M baseband processors and Cavium’s ThunderX, a 64-bit ARMv8 SoC for next generation Data Center and Telco Cloud Applications, is applicable for both typical BTS and Cloud RAN deployments.

Using ProgRAN, MSPs may deploy, modify or introduce different scheduling, admission control and handover management algorithms to different flows in different parts of their network and conduct such controls via a simple programming interface.

Next Generation 5G technologies will include new, higher-frequency spectrum, including millimeter wave, Massive MIMO and optimized modulation, coding, and multiple access technologies for the new spectra to satisfy the growing demand in wireless connectivity as well as associated data rates using technologies like:
  • ·Network Function Virtualization (NFV)                                                               The industry trend away from vertically integrated, inflexible and non-scalable equipment within the network towards software running on off-the-shelf ThunderX ARM servers in the cloud.
  • Software-Defined Networking (SDN)                                                                   For both the Core and Radio Access Networks, so that MSPs may develop new revenue sources via programmable control of the network.
The key differentiator for 5G systems will be the orchestration of the overall system (CN+RAN) control to realize the benefits of Telco Cloud while taking full advantage of the transport capacity over a multitude of spectra and distributed over a large geographical area.

“We have worked closely with Argela to leverage our experience in NFV/CRAN operator trials both on ThunderX and OCTEON Fusion-M to bring this very exciting product to market. As an OCTEON Fusion-M licensee, Argela has access to Cavium’s leading silicon and software technologies for NFV/CRAN implementations,” said Raj Singh, General Manager, Wireless Broadband Group, Cavium, Inc.  “We are very excited by Argela’s innovative architecture and look forward to working closely with them to enable rapid adoption of this exciting new technology.”

Cavium Unveils Flash Support for the Cavium ThunderX™ Processor Family

ThunderX processors with SanDisk Flash solutions will accelerate performance for HPC and Hyperscale workloads

Frankfurt, Germany, July 13, 2015 – Cavium, Inc., (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, cloud, wired and wireless networking, today announced  support for SanDisk flash memory solutions  with Cavium’s 64-bit ThunderX processor family, to accelerate the  performance of  Hyperscale and HPC workloads.

“Our ARMv8 ThunderX processors deliver best-in-class performance for high-intensity workloads such as HPC, big data, and large-scale web applications. With up to 48 high-performance cores and integrated accelerators, we help drive faster results and reduced TCO,” said Steve Cumings, Director, Market Development, Cavium.  “SanDisk is a leader in flash technology and we look forward to working with them to deliver best-in-class solutions.”

SanDisk delivers innovative datacenter storage solutions ranging from Solid State Drives (SSDs) to PCIe application accelerators and storage systems.  These solutions accelerate performance of servers and storage arrays supporting cloud, big data and database workloads, and market research data shows that flash technology is being rapidly adopted across all computing tiers.  Each solution enables faster processing – and faster time-to-results – as customers seek to address the gap between increasing processor speeds and slow-moving hard disk drive (HDD) storage.

“SanDisk delivers Flash-based storage solutions that accelerate workload performance for our customers and we see Cavium taking a similar CPU design approach for HPC and other demanding workloads,” said John Scaramuzzo, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Solutions, SanDisk.  “As datacenter workloads, compute and storage requirements continue to grow, so too will the demand for flash based storage acceleration. We intend to work with and enable innovators like Cavium to address these needs.”

The ThunderX product family provides best-in-class 64-bit ARMv8 data center and cloud processors, offering an unprecedented level of integration and industry leading SoC performance. With high performance custom cores, single and dual socket configurations, very high memory bandwidth, and integrated hardware accelerators, this family of processors delivers best-in-class performance per dollar and performance per watt.  The ThunderX family includes multiple SKUs that are board-compatible, enabling servers optimized for compute, storage, network and security.
