Cavium and Elenion Technologies Collaborate to Offer Silicon Photonics Enabled End-to-End Server-to-Switch Solutions

Enabling Disruptive Data Center Architecture Transformation Through Innovative On-Board Optical Engines 

LOS ANGELES, March 20, 2017 – Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable secure and intelligent packet processing, and Elenion Technologies (“Elenion”), an innovator in silicon photonics, today announced an end-to-end reference architecture for Next Generation Enterprise and Cloud Data Centers incorporating Cavium’s QLogic Network Interface Cards (NICs) and XPliant®-based switches, and Elenion’s Silicon Photonics on-board optics. This direct fiber-to-the-server and parallel multi-channel on-board solution for switches enables increased bandwidth to the server, aggregation to 400G and beyond, lower power consumption, and a path to the industry target of < $1/Gb.

Cavium and Elenion will be showcasing their reference design for fiber-to-the-server solutions during OFC 2017 in Los Angeles (March 20-23). Cavium is contributing two important elements of this architecture. The first is Cavium’s QLogic high performance multi-protocol Ethernet adapters supporting 10Gb/25Gb/40Gb/100Gb speeds and ideally suited for enterprise and cloud data centers. And the second is Cavium’s XPliant Ethernet switch family, first to deliver a high throughput programmable data center switching solution that is shipping today in production. Platforms based on the XPliant Ethernet switch family leverage its programmatic control of table resources and pipeline logic to meet the specific needs of the network architecture and while providing exceptional packet visibility and telemetry. The demonstration leverages Elenion’s next-generation photonics platform and packaging technology, and showcases advanced on-board transceivers with light sources integrated onto the silicon photonics. This innovative integration enables truly scalable, cost disruptive on-board solutions for NIC and switch applications within the data center (DC).

Cavium Collaborates with Microsoft to Showcase SONiC Compatibility at OCP US Summit 2017

Cavium seamlessly connects SONiC software on XPliant® Ethernet switches

SAN JOSE, CA – Mar. 8, 2017 – Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM) a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable secure and intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, cloud, wired and wireless networking, today announced support for Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC) on Cavium’s XPliant® Ethernet switches.

SONiC is an open source project contributed by Microsoft which is comprised of a collection of networking software components required to build network devices like switches.

During the OCP US Summit being held in Santa Clara, Microsoft and Cavium will collaborate to showcase SONiC running on OCP AS7512-32X open network 100GE data center platform by Edgecore Networks, which features the XPliant programmable Ethernet switch device.

“SONiC is about cloud speed and scale,” said Eric Hayes, VP/GM, Switch Platform Group at Cavium. “By supporting SONiC we are enabling developers to unleash innovation with cloud-scale agility, greatly improving data center network operational efficiency, and significantly increasing the ROI of the datacenter operator's switching infrastructure investment.”

Cavium's XPliant Ethernet switch family is the first to deliver a high throughput programmable datacenter switching solution that is shipping today in production. Platforms based on the XPliant Ethernet switch family leverage its programmatic control of table resources and pipeline logic to meet the specific needs of the network architecture and while providing an advanced packet visibility and telemetry. In addition to programmability, the XPliant family of Ethernet switches architecture offers a fully centralized shared dynamically allocated packet buffer to absorb large packet bursts and provide advanced traffic management functions.

The switching demonstration will include a variety of hardware platforms such as Arista 7160, Edge-Core AS7512-32X and Wedge 100C and diversity of disaggregated switching software solutions available to run with XPliant ASICs such as FBOSS, OpenSwitch, PicOS, PontOS, SONiC and others.

Cavium to Contribute the First Programmable Wedge 100C Switch Design to OCP

Cavium’s Programmable Switch Enables Innovative OCP Open Data Center Solutions
SAN JOSE, CA – January 24, 2017 – Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM) a leading provider of semiconductor products that provides intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, cloud, wired and wireless networking, today announced that it will contribute its Wedge 100C switch hardware design, based on the production ready, field deployed, XPliant® Programmable ASIC, to the Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation.

The programmable Wedge 100C is an open switch platform, focused on Top of Rack deployments with 10G/25G/40G/50G/100G server connectivity and 100GbE uplinks to the aggregation layer of the network. The programmable Wedge 100C design uses Cavium XPliant CNX88091, programmable production-ready Ethernet switch and is based on the original OCP-ACCEPTED™ Wedge 100 switch specification and designs which were contributed by Facebook in October 2016.

The contributed network switch can be managed by a variety of Network Operation Systems (NOS), including the Facebook OpenSwitching System ("FBOSS") software stack.

Cavium’s XPliant Family of Ethernet Switches uniquely address the needs of today’s highly dynamic datacenter networks by enabling developers to continuously evolve and improve data center network operations. The world’s first programmable Wedge 100C open switch platform will allow developers to continuously introduce new protocols, adapt networks to new server technologies like containers, and improve network visibility without requiring the deployment of new network switching systems. These attributes extend the life cycle of the Wedge 100C switch, and deliver on the OCP vision of providing high ROI on the datacenter operator’s switching infrastructure investment.
